What do Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani have in common?

Well, their paintings have been unlucky today.

Reason - Their exquisite work of art was stolen today early morning from Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris.

In a serious breach of security, a thief smashed a window pane, walked into the high security museum and walked away with paintings worth 100 Million Euros.

Let us pray and hope that the miscreant is caught and the paintings are  bought to where they belong.

Gown Vs Saree - Cannes 2010

It's summer time in Europe. It's that time of the year when the Cannes Film Festival makes news.

It is one of the most respected and prestigious film festivals across the world. 

It is a platform for film makers to showcase their work of art. It is a stage for actors and actresses across the world to exhibit their talents. And finally, it is an opportunity for brands to make their mark.

All of this drives several Indian stars to Cannes.

This year, two Indian actresses have made a mark and made news waves across India and the World.

Aishwarya Rai, the ex Miss World, represented L'Oreal at the Cannes film festival.

She looked pretty in a gown. 

But if she looked pretty, then Deepika Padukone looked stunning - or as a website said "Insanely Hot". And she was wearing the Indian Ensemble - Saree.

Deepika represented Chivas Regal at the Cannes Film Festival.

Gateway of India - Bombay

Bombay (a.k.a. Mumbai) is a city on the western coast of India.

A city of dreams. People from across India come to Bombay with the aim of making it big. And some of them manage it. Bombay gets the best out of it's people.

It is "the" biggest money spinner for India - this makes it the commercial capital of India.

It is the second most populous city in India - with a population of approximately 22 Million.

With all this, you must have made up an image of Bombay - or Mumbai as it is known now - an image of a cosmopolitan city, with skyscrapers, mass rapid transit systems, flashy cars, clean roads et all. 

But then - Bombay is only a limited version of all of this.

Iceland Eyjafjallajokull Volcano Ash Map Projection

Over the last few days, I found people visiting my blog in search of the updates on the Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull Volcano Ash Map.

Probably they were looking for the current map of the volcanic ash.

Maybe they had to plan their travel. Or possibly, they wanted to check whether their flight would cross paths with the ash.

And with adequate information on the current presence of the Volcanic Ash, they might take a judicious decision on whether to go ahead with the travel or not.

Many years back, I used to read about bloggers who blog for a social cause. 

Now I hope I have joined that category!!

What Makes Twitter Successfull?

First it was Orkut. And then Facebook.

But recently Twitter has taken the online world by storm. 

 

Made me wonder, what made Twitter a grand success in this cramped online world?

Jotting down a few reasons, which I think contributed to it's success.

1. An uber cool and elegant interface.

2. Something on your mind?

    "Tweet" it. Share it with your friends, friends of friends and the world!!

3. Tweets can't be more than 140 characters.

    This made reading short, simple and sweet.

4. Facebook and Orkut are social networking sites. Every individual who registered with these websites shared a lot of personal and social information. 

    Twitter was devoid of this feature - making it a huge success with celebrities.

5.  Fan following or Celebrity following was deeply embedded in the culture of the common man - who is always looking for heroes. Some of us even try to make our lifestyle similar to our heroes.

    Twitter scored a perfect 10 on this point. It gave you an opportunity to follow and track your celebrities. And you could do this at the click of a link (no confirmations required).

     It gave you a peek into their lives. What more could you ask for? 

6.  Celebrities have an inherent style of bragging about their followers and fans.  

     Twitter gave them an opportunity to show their mass following. They made their profiles available in the public domain. The fans started following them. 

     Net result - A lot celebrities with millions of followers. This increased the Twitter network.

7.  Everyone likes to be heard. 

     "Tweeting" made this possible.

8.  Some people are good listeners. They can just spend their time listening to other people talk.

     "Following" made this possible.

Barbara Mori

Barbara Mori is making news - just about everyday - in India. And that has been the case for the last six months.

Whats the occasion? 

Her first Indian film - "Kites" - is scheduled to be released in India and across the world in two weeks time. 

And why is Barbara gaining all the attention?

First of all, she isn't an Indian. She is a Mexican actress. And an actress from a foreign shore, working in an Indian film, does garner attention.

And secondly, she is a stunner, to say the least.

This picture would make you wonder how old (or rather young) is she?

Well, she is in her 30s - 32 to be precise. This is way off the traditional Indian actresses - who start acting when they are teenagers.  However, she is beautiful enough to give the others a run for their money. Everything depends on the success of her film.

Her recent interview in the Sunday Times of India made me realize that she is more than an eye candy.

Indian actresses, and to a certain extent the English actress too, are usually very careful about revealing their marital status. They fear that their market value would decrease if people know that they are married. And most of them retire when they are blessed with a kid. 

Barbara is different. She isn't married - but has a kid. She is a single mother, which she says is "quite normal" in her country.

This is what she had to say about this point.

I have a child though I am not married, which is not a problem at all for me. My son is the most beautiful thing to happen to me. He is my friend and my life revolves around him. I would like to tell other single mothers - why should you make compromises with your life just because of the society? Live for yourself and, if you have a child, for him.

So here is Ms. Mori, openly talking about her personal life, without having any fear of it's impact on her first Indian professional endeavor. Very Brave, I would say.

Well, she has been quite brave - being a survivor of cancer. She was detected of having breast cancer at the age of 29. Luckily for her, it was detected in time. She had her treatment and is now cured.

This is what she had to say about the learning from this tough phase in her life. 

Women should go for checkups regularly so cancer can be detected in time and be cured early.

And in an interesting tidbit, some people think Barbara Mori looks similar to the Hollywood rage Megan Fox.

Only time will tell whether Barbara manages to achieve the same level of fame, and possibly fortune, as her esteemed look alike. Wishing Barbara lots of luck for her debut film.
